We were all in a state of shock, disbelief and anxiety immediately following the announcement that Donald J. Trump would be the next president of the United States. Notwithstanding his racism, misogyny, irrational fear of all practicing Muslims, corrupt business practices, utter lack of experience or preparation and losing the popular vote by nearly 2 million votes, Trump will bring his brand of conservatism to the White House. In a country that was founded on white supremist thought and behavior, the form is new but the substance is not.
For most of us, our sense of Maat – justice and fairness – is offended.
Many of us have struggled the past two weeks to find the words to explain this to our children while grappling with the fundamental question of what this means for our future. This is a time of discord; a living example of the disharmony of hate, and as a spiritual community, we find ourselves in a moment of truth…again.
Some advice, demonstrated for us in the lives of our ancestors, is to be in rhythm with the times, but in tune with the infinite power, wisdom and truth of God.
How is it possible to be “in rhythm” with the times that are so indecently off-beat? First, recognize that this political moment is the reality that we are faced with. Second, understand that it is a natural consequence of the end-of-days for white nationalism, white supremacy, white privilege and white power. Third, and here is where our spiritual understanding of things becomes important, do not accept this as the permanent condition.
If we seek to answer the question, “What is the spiritual purpose of these times for us?” we have to find ways to be “in tune” with the Infinite Power. The Universe has harmony as its key characteristic. We can choose to be in tune with the purpose of Creation.
Racism is a great cancer on America’s soul. Was it in remission? Until it is addressed, the country will get sicker and sicker…As we work together to discover our course of treatment, we must be aligned with God’s purpose for us. It is only this simple thing: to be in rhythm with life’s conditions while being in tune with the Infinite. If we are tuned to the Infinite, the Eternal, the Spiritual, we will find the power, strength and resilience to pull us through the adverse, out-of-rhythm present conditions.
